March 2017 Newsletter

The 2017 boating season is almost upon us so I thought I’d put together a short newsletter containing some bullet points of info that may be of interest and details of important club information regarding the year ahead.

  • We have a gap in the event schedule in September that has been provisionally allocated for a one day event.  A lot of members, myself included have tenders, either on davits or stored below decks but able to be deployed quickly.  There are countless destinations in and around the Solent that are easily accessible by dinghy but not so suitable for larger boats due to tidal restrictions and narrow channels.  The upper reaches of the rivers Yar, Hamble, Medina and Beaulieu to name a few.  A day trip I propose would be cruising to the Royal Victoria Yacht club moorings at Fishbourne (in the big boats - tidal) and then dinghying to the end of Wooton Creek where there is a nice pub situated at Wooton Bridge.  For anyone with larger tender / outboard engine combinations a trip starting at Bembridge Harbour on another occasion, past Priory Bay and Sea View and in to Ryde leisure harbour for a stroll around the town and lunch at one of the many eateries. (This one has been on my ‘to do’ list for a while).  If successful we can make this a regular part of the agenda and really get to know our cruising area!  Please let me know if this is something you’d like to be involved with and I will make the necessary planning.

  • At the AGM last year, we briefly discussed whether any members would like to volunteer themselves (and their boats) for the Hamble Lifeboat to practise their rescue procedures.  If anyone fancies it please let me know and I’ll pass your details to them…

  • For anyone not aware, we have various discounts available for members including a couple of new ones for 2017 – ‘Jolly Roger’ land based training school (RYA navigation, Radio, First aid, day skipper ect) and Signature Marine (Engine and Drive servicing, Marine electrics and repairs) both offering 10% discounts on production of membership card.  See the full list of business’s offering discounts here with links to their websites.

  • There have been a couple of small changes to the events schedule for this year.  This should now have been emailed to you but can I ask that you look at the updated version on the website and print out to replace any previous versions you may have for this year.  Whilst on the site I’d be grateful if you could check that your details and boat / name are still current just in case I missed any changes since last season! (Please let Jane Whyte know if you need your password / login details re-sent for the members’ area)

  • When I sent out the club renewal invitations I had requested details of your boat insurance.  I’m still waiting on a few of you, so if you haven’t already sent me your details I’d be grateful for them before the first on water event at Easter. (I don’t necessarily need a copy of your policy but will require details of the amount of liability covered, insurance provider and expiry date)

  • Finally, the events schedule is almost complete but we are still needing co-ordinators for the Yarmouth trip on May 13th / 14th and the Brighton event on August 26th-28th).  As above, please let me or any of the committee know if you’re intending to go to this event and would be willing to help out.

Wishing everyone a great boating season and don’t forget to email photos for us to put on the web site
